Karl Lagerfeld’s Macy’s Line Made Its Runway Debut in Minneapolis Where It ‘Fell a Bit Flat’

The reaction in Minneapolis wasn't one of joy that the Kaiser himself, Karl Lagerfeld, one of if not the most important designer of our time, was showing clothes he designed there — but not because they don't understand or appreciate fashion.

The hype surrounding Karl Lagerfeld’s new capsule collection for Macy’s fell a bit flat in the Midwest on Friday after the line made its runway debut during the department store’s annual Glamorama fashion-show-meets-concert in Minneapolis. Attendees were more impressed with the other collections shown that night by Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Tracy Reese and Sonia Rykiel — although those are designer lines and far from the masstige Lagerfeld brings.

They just like fashion fashion, not Macy's fashion. They also like Bruno Mars, who "got the biggest reaction of the night with hit songs like 'Grenade' and 'Just the Way You Are.'" But even in New York, there does seem to be a considerable lack of hype for Karl's Macy's line, and being a fashion capital, this town is easy to win over with these types of things. The hype of this one-off line doesn't even compare to the mayhem of certain designer lines for H&M, like Stella McCartney and Comme des Garçons, and designer lines for Target, like Alexander McQueen and Rodarte. Even Madonna's Macy's line got more hype — but Lourdes designs that, so maybe it's not a fair comparison. It's tough for anyone to compete with Madonna spawn, even the Kaiser.
